Crocktoberfest

Here, Gary gets his slow cooked pork on at Crocktoberfest.

Back in October, I attended Crocktoberfest after being tipped off to its existence by Yvo over at The Feisty Foodie. What is Crocktoberfest, you may wonder? Why, it’s an event put on by The National Pork Board to “rediscover the rewards of cooking low and slow.” So, basically, lots of pork being cooked up in crock pots – yeah, that’s something I’d be down for. At this event, five finalists in a contest to come up with the best original pork slow cooker recipe had their recipes prepared to be served to event attendees. [...]

Taste the Best

Here, Gary samples some of the very best the specialty food industry has to offer.

Earlier this month, I attended Taste the Best, an event hosted by the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade to allow members of the press to sample some of the winners of the sofi™ Gold Awards for the Outstanding Specialty Foods. Spread out over several tables were a cornucopia of foods – chocolate, olive oil, vinegar, bacon, ketchup, and much, much more. Here’s just a small sample of the things I managed to taste during the event. [...]

McRib Launch Party

Here, Gary attends a party to celebrate the return of the McRib.

In 1982, McDonald’s introduced to America the McRib, a sandwich that, surprisingly (or not), does not feature ribs between the buns. Actually, it’s possible there’s some rib in it since the meat itself is a ground pork patty that’s shaped to look like a tiny rack of ribs. Also on the sandwich is plenty of barbecue sauce, raw onions, and pickles. [...]

Grub Street Food Festival

Here, Gary works his way through the crowd at the Grub Street Food Festival in order to sample some of the delicious wares on display.

A few weeks back, the Hester Street Fair was the site for the first-ever Grub Street Food Festival, a block party in which 40 vendors brought plenty of food to be sold. And, boy, did the food sell – when I got there a little before 2 pm, there were already a few vendors there that had gone through all their food for the day, with more than four hours to go. That didn’t stop people from showing up by the F trainload, filling the tiny space up to a claustrophobic capacity – if we were indoors, it’d be a fire hazard. [...]

2010 NYCWFF Grand Tasting Day 2

Here, Gary eats his way through a second session of the 2010 New York City Wine & Food Festival’s Grand Tasting.

As luck would have it, my duties on my second day of Eater Lounge coverage were done by noon so my editor asked if I wanted another go at the Grand Tasting. Um, hell yeah! My first go the previous day was an abbreviated one – I arrived over two hours into a three event so I didn’t really get a chance at some of the goodies. This time around, I got there close to the beginning and really did a bang-up job getting through as much as food as I could. [...]
