Random Stops in San Francisco

Here, Gary shows off photos from a stop for coffee at Blue Bottle Coffee, a burrito run at Taqueria Cancun, and a dessert stop at Gelateria Naia.

For the final set of photos from San Francisco, we have a veritable potpourri of different places and foods. On our first morning in San Francisco, JP and I spent some time trying to find a coffee place – Google Maps sent us to a roasting warehouse first – before we finally stumbled upon local fave Blue Bottle Coffee. […]

In-N-Out Burger

Here, Gary makes the requisite trip to In-N-Out Burger while out on the west coast.

It was fait accompli when planning out this Bay Area trip that we’d be visiting In-N-Out Burger – after all, it’s not like any of us live near one. Not unless you consider the closest one in Centerville, UT to be anywhere close to the Northeast. There must have been a lot of people with the same idea at the location in San Francisco’s touristy Fisherman’s Wharf (which also happens to be the only location in the city) because the line was out the door when we went. But you know what? We were there already and we would not be denied, long line and idiot tourists be damned. […]

Little Saigon

Here, Gary visits a couple of places in San Francisco’s Little Saigon for some bánh mì and phở.

If there’s one Asian cuisine that JP and I like with equal fervor, it’s gotta be Vietnamese. It’s not unheard of for us to have bánh mì for breakfast whenever one of us is visiting the other. After all, if they serve a terrific cup of coffee with your meal, why can’t a sandwich filled with all manners of pork be breakfast? That’s exactly what brought us to Little Saigon on the first morning of our Bay Area trip, in search of a bite before the drive up north to Santa Rosa. Then, on the final day of the trip, we made a return visit to the neighborhood in search of some phở before our flight home. On both counts, we were successful. […]

Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Here, Gary takes a stroll through the farmers market at San Francisco’s Ferry Building.

I love farmers markets. Despite the popularity and the corresponding crowds, I still try to visit the market at Union Square once a week (usually Saturday) to see what’s fresh and in season. In San Francisco, the most comparable market would undoubtedly have to be the one situated at the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero. Finding myself staying Friday night at a hotel just steps away from the market, it would be silly not to stop by the next morning, right? Exactly. […]

Bay Area Dim Sum

Here, Gary and JP make the rounds of cheap dim sum in San Francisco and Oakland.

When JP and I are together, it’s not all fancy restaurants and expensive meals. No, sometimes we like to slum it and get some deliciously cheap eats. That’s especially true when you’ve blown nearly $150 apiece on two meals alone out in Napa. So while in San Francisco and Oakland, we snacked a few times on really inexpensive dim sum from their Chinatown’s pastry shops. I don’t think we spent over $20 between the three shops we visited which was definitely a nice break on our wallets. […]
