Taste the Best

Here, Gary samples some of the very best the specialty food industry has to offer.

Earlier this month, I attended Taste the Best, an event hosted by the National Association for the Specialty Food Trade to allow members of the press to sample some of the winners of the sofi™ Gold Awards for the Outstanding Specialty Foods. Spread out over several tables were a cornucopia of foods – chocolate, olive oil, vinegar, bacon, ketchup, and much, much more. Here’s just a small sample of the things I managed to taste during the event. [...]

Random Stops in Seattle

Here, Gary shows off photos from a variety of places in Seattle.

For the final set of photos from Seattle, there’s beer, oysters, and coffee. Of course, they’re not all from one place – that’d just be weird. As is tradition (or so I say), the final set of photos from a trip is just a collection of some pretty random but neat stuff. The beer and fries were at Brouwers, a nice Belgian beer bar in the North End, the oysters ($1 each after 10pm) were at Anchovies & Olives, an Ethan Stowell restaurant in the hip Capitol Hill neighborhood, and the coffee and croissant are from Fonte Cafe & Wine Bar.

Blackbird Bakery

Here, Gary takes the ferry out to Bainbridge Island while in Seattle and stops in at Blackbird Bakery for a sweet treat.

On my last full day in the Seattle area, I had some time to kill between lunch and dinner later that night so I decided to take the advice of a friend and boarded a ferry to Bainbridge Island. The island’s a 30-minute ferry ride across Puget Sound and if you ever find yourself in Seattle, you really should ride the ferry, if not for the island, than for the views you get of the area. [...]

McRib Launch Party

Here, Gary attends a party to celebrate the return of the McRib.

In 1982, McDonald’s introduced to America the McRib, a sandwich that, surprisingly (or not), does not feature ribs between the buns. Actually, it’s possible there’s some rib in it since the meat itself is a ground pork patty that’s shaped to look like a tiny rack of ribs. Also on the sandwich is plenty of barbecue sauce, raw onions, and pickles. [...]

Mexicue

Here, Gary continues his mea culpa tour for missing the rookie Vendy Awards finalists by paying Mexicue a visit.

The idea behind the Mexicue truck, self-described as “the sweet, sweet love child of red-hot Mexican cuisine and down-home, barbeque goodness,” is one that’s easily up my alley. I mean, how can it not be? It’s all the combination of the spiciness that makes Mexican cuisine great and the smoky techniques that’s the cornerstone of good, Southern BBQ. It was up for best rookie at this year’s Vendy Awards and, while they didn’t win, there’s always next year’s Vendy Cup for best vendor to strive for. [...]
