Pike Place Market

Here, Gary explores the variety of goods for sale at Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

Shortly after touching down in Seattle and dropping all my stuff off at the hotel, I made a beeline for the Pike Place Market since it was already late in the afternoon and I wanted to see everything it had to offer. One of the places, Hill Valley Chicken, you’ve already seen in my previous post about Seattle’s food stands but this post is devoted to the grocers and fish mongers scattered throughout the vast marketplace here. Seafood, produce, pasta, and chocolate – this post has a little bit of everything that’s edible around these parts. Enjoy! [...]

Jade Garden

Here, Gary starts his last day in Seattle the right way with some dim sum at Jade Garden.

Growing up in New York City, most Sunday mornings meant one thing – dim sum. Ever since I went off to college, my dim sum frequency has waned to maybe once a month, twice every three months. It’s a shame because it’s such a fun meal (or stressful, if you’re with the grandparents). The way the cart ladies walk around shouting their wares isn’t unlike hearing a carnival barker exhorting you to play their games or go on their rides. Except, you know, this is a lot tastier. [...]

Shake Shack Custard Conquest – October 2010

Here, Gary shows off some photos from eating through the October 2010 selection of special flavors of frozen custard at Shake Shack.

This month, all seven flavors were new to me. All seven! Unfortunately, I only got to four of this month. Yeah, I know, I’m starting to lose some steam here but it’s tough to eat all this custard. Then again, I missed three of the custards yet still managed to come back for the S’mores (my favorite from this month) so maybe I’ve still got some juice left in me. [...]

Grub Street Food Festival

Here, Gary works his way through the crowd at the Grub Street Food Festival in order to sample some of the delicious wares on display.

A few weeks back, the Hester Street Fair was the site for the first-ever Grub Street Food Festival, a block party in which 40 vendors brought plenty of food to be sold. And, boy, did the food sell – when I got there a little before 2 pm, there were already a few vendors there that had gone through all their food for the day, with more than four hours to go. That didn’t stop people from showing up by the F trainload, filling the tiny space up to a claustrophobic capacity – if we were indoors, it’d be a fire hazard. [...]

Souvlaki GR

Here, Gary makes up for missing Souvlaki GR during the Vendy Awards by tracking their truck down on the streets of Manhattan.

So when I covered the Vendy Awards last month, there was one glaring omission among my photos – the rookie competitors and, in particular, Souvlaki GR or Souvlaki Truck as it’s more commonly referred to. They actually won the award for best rookie and when I asked some friends what their favorites were that day on Governors Island, Souvlaki Truck was a frequent response. I actually tried finding them the next day at their Soho location but, silly me, I didn’t realize they’d be taking a break after an exhausting awards day. [...]
