Ever since I first saw the Xi’an Famous Foods stall in the basement of a Flushing mall, featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, I’ve occasionally visited them before and after Mets games. When they announced they were opening a location in Manhattan’s Chinatown, I was excited since that meant I could eat their food without having to first see the Mets lose (tough times, these past few seasons). Saigon Shack

In this solo dining adventure, Gary tries the pho at Saigon Shack, a new Vietnamese place in Greenwich Village.

While putting together an opening report post for Eater a few weeks back, I was trying to verify whether Saigon Shack had indeed opened already. I stumbled upon some reviews on their Yelp page which led me to strongly believe that they had opened so that was certainly an easy enough task for the day. Curiosity got the better of me and I started reading through the mostly positive reviews and saw that there was a Tenka coupon for over 50% off of a lunch special – pho, dumplings, and coffee for $6. Myers + Chang

In this solo dining adventure, Gary has an excellent, if unconventional, dim sum experience at Boston’s Myers + Chang.

Ken’s Noodle House

In this solo dining adventure, Gary has a nice, hot bowl of ramen at Ken’s Noodle House on a cool autumn day in Boston.

In Boston for the weekend to volunteer at a beer festival, the one place I really wanted to visit was Ken’s Noodle House to satisfy my ramen fix. It must be fall because this is the third ramen place I’d eaten at in a month’s time, the second that week alone. I’d actually been to Ken’s before but that was after having a few beers previous and I wanted to eat here again without all those beers sloshing around in my stomach. Also, anything you eat when you’ve been drinking will almost always seem like manna from heaven so I wanted to make sure my praise the first time wasn’t entirely alcohol-induced. [...]

Long Provincial Vietnamese

In this solo dining adventure, Gary has one last meal in Seattle at Long Provincial Vietnamese before his flight home.

Between this trip and the one to the Bay Area in June, a final meal at a Vietnamese restaurant is quickly becoming the grand finale of my dining forays when I travel. For my last meal in Seattle, I had lunch at Long Provincial Vietnamese. Really, no trip to the west coast would be complete without at least one nice Asian meal since they tend to do it better out there.
